ERNEST HEMINGWAY

biography

Ernest Miller Hemingway, known as Ernest Hemingway, was an important American writer who also worked as a journalist. He was born in July in 1899 and he died in the same month in 1961. He formed part of the World War I, a period which was really influential in his works. He belonged to the famous Lost Generation, a group of relevant writers where Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, and John Dos Passos among others were included. He was the one that created the term Lost Generation” as Wikipedia says.  He was really influential in the 20th century and most concretely in the fiction of this period. According to Wikipedia.com, this is the reason why he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Some of his most famous novels are The Old Man and the Sea, The Sun Also Rises, and From Whom the Bell Tolls.
When he was 19 years old, he participated in the World War I as an ambulance driver and the Italian army gave him The Italian Silver Medal of Bravery but he was injured and sent to a hospital in Milan. Here, he felt in love with a nurse and he proposed her to get married but she finished with their relationship in order to start going out with another man. In this moment, Hemingway was desolated and he decided to write an important short story called A Farewell to Arms.

The 1930s were really important for this author because he formed part, as a journalist, of the Spanish Civil War where he met his third wife, Martha Gellhorn. This war was so influential to him that it became the main topic of other of his famous novels, From Whom the Bell Tolls, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. However, it was with his work The Old Man and the Sea when he finally was awarded. He also won the Nobel Prize in Literature which is considered “the peak of his literary career” .
Although, he was in the best moment of his career, he suffered for several illnesses such as depression and high blood pressure among others, what led him to commit suicide in 1961 in Ketchum, Odahio.
